Burnside chefs cook up a storm in competition Two Burnside High School students have won the National Secondary Schools Culinary Challenge in Auckland. With gas hobs flaring, knives chopping, saucepans simmering and teamwork at its best, Clize Craven and Miku Kiyama claimed top spot. Winning the regional from 10 secondary schools around the country put their skills to the test as they created four servings of both an entree and main course, all within 90min. Locally grown beetroot had to feature in the entree, with chicken, potatoes and seasonal New Zealand grown vegetables key ingredients of the main dish. After a gruelling 90min of cooking and a nerve-wracking wait as the judges deliberated the duo’s two dishes got the nod. The entree was a golden beetroot fritter with baby chioggia and red saute, goats cheese, and beetroot chips accompanied by a rich beetroot sauce. The main had chicken breast filled with semi-dried tomato and preserved lemon on a crumbed parmesan potato cake with petite sausage,

A stunned Clize said that a lot of hard work went into preparing for the event and the win has made it all worthwhile. “We did well – and so did the other contestants,” Clize said. “We are proud of our effort and would like to thank our teachers for helping us to achieve what we have.”

St Margaret’s College won the South Island netball title last week. They beat Cashmere High School in the final 27-26 with Madison Lloyd nailing a shot to win the match in the last second. The win didn’t look likely with one minute to go. Scores were tied at 26-26 when St Margaret’s turned the ball over giving Cashmere the chance to win it. However, Cashmere coughed up the ball themselves giving Lloyd the chance to steal the title. St Margaret’s were big favourites heading into the match and were up 17-10 at half-time thanks to a 9-2 second quarter. It was St Margaret’s second win in the last month after they won SuperNet over Ashburton College.

The duo were scored across a number of criteria – food preparation, food safety, timing, sustainable cooking practice – including minimisation of food waste – presentation, taste and the use of New Zealand grown seasonal vegetables, potatoes and chicken. Chief judge, chef Mark Wylie of Cater Plus, said in the end it was a tough and close decision. “All the judges were impressed by the creativity and thought that had gone into each dish the students served,” he said. “They had taken their dishes to the next level by sourcing and including local, regional produce in their recipes, it was truly outstanding and it reflected in the taste and presentation of the final dishes.” The winning duo each receives a $2000 study scholarship and a trip to Tahiti to represent New Zealand at the International Secondary Schools Culinary Competition in October. Their school receives a $1000 Bidvest voucher and a Blue Seal turbofan oven and stand from Moffat New Zealand.

Repairs for Jellie Park in planning stage BY ANDREW KING

Investigations into what needs to be repaired at Jellie Park Recreation and Sports Centre are now under way. The complex suffered significant earthquake damage that may begin to affect the operation and longevity of the facility if not repaired in the next two to three years. City council staff are looking at a phased shutdown of the facility.

The shutdowns will be timed in a way that will minimise disruption with working currently being done to confirm the staging options. An example of this would be work on indoor pools would likely be carried out while the outdoor pools are open during the summer. Work on the sport pool will possibly begin as soon as summer 2015/16. During the repairs city council

staff will also look for opportunities to make operational savings to lighting and other areas. Details of the work and planned shutdowns will be made available once the scoping phase is complete. So far stage one will see work start to repair to the indoor sport pool and steam room/sauna areas. Further details and dates will be confirmed and announced as soon as they are available.

Gallery opening a dream come Merivale resident Katrina McGettigan is an artist who loves to carve powder on the slopes when she gets a chance. She is also opening an art gallery in Rolleston. She talks with reporter Andrew King about art, skiing and growing up in Methven Hi Katrina tell us what made you decide to be an artist? What actually happened was, I used to do a bit of art at school but then I went overseas and lost it all. When I came back I started studying to be a teacher and didn’t have a lot of money so I painted a picture of poppies for my sister’s birthday. I couldn’t afford a present at the time as a poor student and it took off from there. I received a lot of comments about that piece and even got a few commissions out of it. Were your parents artistic? Umm no, I am kind of the black sheep of the family. Pretty much my whole family are all into science while I trained as an interior designer. I went to London and became a nanny as that was a pretty good travelling job and I loved looking after children. I also did some time in France as a ski guide in the French Alps in a place called La Plagne. That was really cool. I did a stint in Italy as a nanny too. Where did you grow up? I grew up in Methven.

Were you one of those “need to escape the small town” types or did it suit you? Yes, I was one of those escape types. I went to St Kevin’s College boarding school in Oamaru from age 12. Then I came up to Christchurch to study interior design at Christchurch Polytechnic. Plus all the travelling around the world. Growing up in Methven with the Southern Alps right there, that backdrop must have had an influence on you becoming an artist? It really came later on. After travelling around Europe and Asia then coming back to New Zealand you really appreciate the landscape and just how beautiful the country is. I have a totally different mindset now. I look at photos that I took a while ago and think ‘yeah, I can use those for this now’. I look at things in a completely

different light. So you are opening an art gallery in Rolleston, has that been a dream of yours? It’s a dream. I never thought it would happen. I also didn’t think that I would be going full time with my art either. I didn’t think it would be a possibility. What will feature in it? There will be my work as well as Michelle Green, who has helped me set up the gallery, and we are planning to have rotating artists monthly. It is the first art gallery in Rolleston. A lot of art galleries in Christchurch came down in the

earthquakes so we want to give artists more space to showcase their work. The name of the gallery is Expoze Art and we hope to have it open this week, and have an official opening next week. I hear you are painting native birds, one a day for 100 days, how long do they take to paint? They take two or three hours; some take longer than others and it has been quite a challenge, I have been quite busy so they sometimes take me to late at night. Do you have to go find the bird to paint it, which could prove troublesome?

You need to get permission to use other people’s photos. I have gone and got permission to use their photos, like DOC. I put an acknowledgement on the paintings when I put my work online. So you have just finished teaching at Selwyn House Preschool, what was your favourite thing about being a teacher? With younger children they are learning so quickly every day, it is so inspiring. It is something new something exciting every day and the job is just so rewarding. One of the things I will continue to do is teach children art.

true for ski bunny worked in a rest home in Methven but is now retired. Did you ever want to follow in their footsteps? No, not really. I didn’t want to be a doctor but I never really dreamed of being an artist either, it just sort of happened. What was it like to be a child in Methven? It was great being next to the mountains. I went to the Catholic school in Methven, Our Lady of the Snows School and there were six in my year – two boys four girls. It is just a nice little community. I see people and catch up with them every now and then in Christchurch. I was a bit of a ski bunny. Did you ski quite a bit? It was just something I enjoyed on the weekends. I would have liked to get into racing but it didn’t come about. St Kevin’s didn’t have a ski team so I really only skied when I went home. Do you have brothers and sisters? I have three brothers and two sisters. Wow, big family! What do they all get up to? My oldest brother is an engineer, another older brother who is a doctor, an older sister who makes wine under her own label up in Marlborough, then there is me. I have another younger brother who is an environmental lawyer and a younger sister who is a dentist. Do you all get along?

I do school holiday workshops but I want to market myself a bit more. At the moment I have a few children’s art classes and I am planning to grow that. We will probably have a few in Rolleston at the gallery I am opening alongside some adult classes. I have had people asking so the interest is there. Will you miss being a teacher? I may do later on. I may do some relieving, it just depends. I have a lot of art stuff on at the moment. With being an artist you don’t know what will happen with trends so you have to keep all doors open. I have been pretty lucky with sales so far. I have just stepped into the full-time pool after just resigning from being a teacher a couple of weeks ago. What was your favourite moment as a teacher? I was teaching for four years. One of my favourite memories is that kids take everything literary. One three-year-old was not feeling so well so I was looking after her with another child. She asked me what was wrong. I told her that ‘she has a bug and has to go home.’ The little girl said that the sick child has to go home to get the bug out. I thought that was quite funny. Tell me a bit about your family. What did your parents do? My dad is a general practitioner and my mother was a nurse. They both still live in Methven. Dad is still a GP and mum

Changes to parking on a busy north-west road could be installed. City council has undertaken a review of the time-limited parking on Harewood Rd. A snapshot parking survey on August 3 showed two-hour parking spots had 75 per cent total occupancy. The 30min parking was only 21 per cent full during the survey period. City council staff proposed to change the 30min to one-hour parking and believed the increase in time should see them used more. The 30min parking is on the north side of Harewood Rd from the driveway of Petticoat Lane Costume Hire to Tony’s Tyre Service. The two-hour parking is on the south side of Harewood Rd from the driveway of the Returned Service’s Association to the driveway of the St Paul’s Anglican Church. Staff hope that customers using the local businesses will see the increase in the time as more suitable to their shopping needs. It is looking for public submissions on the plan to gauge how the public wants the issue to be handled.

Helen Taylor is an artist, writer and award winning children’s book illustrator. Her work is inspired by poetry, song and the ‘collector’ of the exotic and beautiful. ‘The Ornithologist and the Lepidopterist hunger for that which is unique. They strive to capture Beauty and preserve it in museum drawers and Bell Jars. Life and Death is on display for all eternity.’ Helen has work in private collections throughout New Zealand and overseas. She lives in the port-side town of Lyttelton. Elisha Jordan is based in Waikuku and has exhibited throughout New Zealand. Elisha’s work is inspired by animals and birds and from an early age loved to observe them. Taught to sculpt with steel by her father and artist Bill Clarke she now uses these methods to recreate beautiful and natural sculptures. “I am trying to recreate something of the beauty and life of nature in all that it is. Mrs Carter said the old library was one of the most well used community facilities in the city. “Before the earthquakes this was one of the busiest community centres in the city so it has been really missed.” She thought that once the facility was back up and running the community groups that used the old library would flood back.

Rock success for band

Call for community involvement in city ward changes

BY ANDREW KING They may be young but they know how to rock. This year’s Christchurch contestants have just played off over three nights in the regional finals of Rockshop Bandquest, a nationwide music contest for intermediate and primary pupils. There were winners in each category for each of the three nights of the competition. Three bands from the Nor’west News area were among the winners. Casebrook Intermediate’s K-Lib grabbed four awards on their night including $200 credit for at the Rockshop for their school. Caleb Barlow won a musicianship award and Cameron Joe won best male vocalist – both boys are in the band K-Lib. Althea Torres is also in K-Lib and won best keyboardist. Pippa McAnergney won the best female vocalist on Friday night with Breens Intermediate School’s Neave Cameron and Juliana Bay from the band The Peasants on Saturday. The competition is for bands of two or more members, from intermediate or primary schools, who play a short set of covers or original songs, with a focus on performance skills. Event co-ordinator Matt Ealand says this age group is increasingly sophisticated and self-motivated. “Rather than just forming a band in their music class, they’re getting together with like-minded

friends, they’re practising outside of school time, using technology to record or promote themselves and showing a real awareness of what it takes to make it in the music industry,” he said. Rockshop spokesman, Hamish Jackson said for most of the entrants Rockshop Bandquest is the biggest musical moment of their lives. “Being part of that is great for us,’’ he said. “Bandquest provides intermediate kids with a platform for live performance – it’s all about participation and giving it a go.’’ This year over 170 bands have entered Rockshop Bandquest with mentoring sessions from successful Smokefreerockquest bands in the afternoon of each regional event, and on-line entries for bands in outlying areas. There will be an online national final announcement on September 24.

THE UPSIDE DOWNS: Lead singer Pippa McAnergney won the award for best female vocalist on the night in the Rockshop Bandquest.

Feedback is being encouraged on the proposed changes to the city wards. Shirley-Papanui Community Board chairman Mike Davidson said residents need to get involved and tell the city council what they think of the proposed changes to the city wards. “The proposal is suggesting significant changes to wards, community boards and councillor numbers as part of a six-yearly review of the city’s representation at local government level,” he said. “Our ward would be particularly affected should the proposal be approved and we really want to hear what people who live in our current ward, think of the proposed new wards and boundaries.” The proposal includes having 16 wards with 16 councillors, up from the current 13. It also suggests seven community boards, down from the current eight. “It’s important that people feel connected to others in the new wards, that they are happy with the boundaries and of course there’s quite a change in the number of councillors,” Mr Davidson said.

Animal rescues equally worthwhile BY MARK THOMAS - FIRE RISK MANAGEMENT OFFICER

The annual Medbury Boarders vs Dayboys rugby game was played on August 28, and was thoroughly enjoyed by the players and spectators alike. The whole school enjoyed an afternoon of great rugby, and this year saw the Dayboys winning the cup 19-5.

Three feline adventurers at different addresses across the city were returned to grateful owners this week, one from a roof, a second from a tree and the last from a locked garage. I know this is the traditional, slightly mocking view of some of the things firefighters are called to do but alongside the drama and danger of fire, the technical skill of removing a smashed up car from

around the occupant’s knees and the trauma of sudden death to the saving of a distressed animal and its equally distressed owner is a very worthwhile service. Well done to the fire crews. A further example of the helpful nature of firefighters was seen in Glenrowan Ave in Avondale last Sunday night where a garage door collapsed on top of a lady’s car, denying her entry to the garage or the car. The Wainoni crew responded, lifted the door, placed it back on to

its tracks and freed the entry for the caller. No fire. No rescue. Just help where it was needed. Any gas leak can be dangerous. When a contractor ruptures the gas main in Colombo St as occurred on Tuesday the danger tends to escalate. While firefighters can’t repair such damage they can make the situation as safe as possible until experts arrive. In this case the gas cloud was dispersed by a water curtain from a fire appliance monitor.

Maths success for pupils

17

BY ANDREW KING Heaton Normal Intermediate pupils have won two Cantamath titles. The year 7 team completing their 20 questions well within the allotted 30min time period – no other team finished the questions before time ran out. Heaton’s year 8 team had stiffer competition and managed to answer all their questions two minutes before their opponents. There were 88 teams competing in the year 7 category and 99 year 8 teams. Heaton Intermediate maths teacher Rachel Bates runs the two teams and was very proud of how they pulled through to take both categories. “Usually, it is quite a close competition, I haven’t seen a team win like that in the time have been involved,” she said. “It is a great competition and we want to make sure every kid is challenged.” Her daughter, Becky Bates, was in the winning year 7 team. “Every time I shot my hand up excitedly to let my team know the answer was correct, the whole Heaton support team would erupt into cheers,” she said. “Later when we received our spectacular trophy we were overjoyed.” Tyler Phipps was one of the champions from Heaton’s year 8 team and said the noise from the supporters was incredible as they worked hard on the 20 questions in front of them. “Our ears throbbed as the noise of the crowd grew louder then ever,” he said. “We all cheered as the announcer assured us that we had answered all the questions correctly and we’d be leaving with the Year 8 Cantamath trophy. “We all felt really happy but also relieved at the same time that all our hard work had paid off.”

Repairs to fix a temporary solution at English Park have been completed. The sport facility suffered damage to the floor of the building in the September 2010 and February 2011 earthquakes. The floor was propped up to make the building safe for people to occupy. Unit manager of Community Facilities Rebuild Darren Moses said the park was okay to occupy while temporary measures were in place. “The floor in the English Park building was temporarily propped after a large crack appeared following the 2010/2011 earthquakes,” he said. “This ensured the building could be occupied by the public.” He said repairs have been carried out to reassure those who were using the park that it was safe to do so. “Although the building continued to be fit to occupy, a decision was made to repair the crack ahead of the main earthquake repair work being carried out because it was highly visible to the public.” The repairs cost a total of $47,000. Further investigations will determine if there is further damage that needs to be repaired. “The temporary propping was removed after these repairs were completed. The remainder of the earthquake repairs will be carried out later this year or early next year,” Mr Moses said.

NASDA’S NEW MUSICAL sWEET CHARITY

A car hit a pole on Clyde Rd near Greers Rd on Wednesday. The crash happened about 10.30am. A witness said the driver was fine. Police, the Fire Service and an ambulance attended the scene.

Burnside High to host its first robotics competition BY ANDREW KING

Burnside High School will host a national robotic competition for the first time on September 12. RoboCup Junior New Zealand is a national robotics competition for school students. The school will have two teams competing. There are three categories, junior, senior and premier. In those categories there are the three options to compete in, robot theatre, rescue or soccer. After winning the premier soccer and the senior rescue categories they will represent the school as well as host the event. Technology teacher Katana Dunn was really excited to host the competition at the school especially since it has teams involved. “This is the first time we are organising and hosting it, can’t remember the last last time it was held here [Christchurch],” she said. Mrs Dunn said that on the way to the same event held in Dunedin last year she decided it would be a good idea to get Burnside High to host. “We suggested that we thought it should be here [Burnside High], the principal thought it was a good idea so we booked it.

“We are trying to promote a robotic direction in the school, what those skills can foster and where they can take you.” The competition allows students to test their creativeness with robotics. “There are three categories,” Mrs Dunn said. “The senior challenge is for students in high school who haven’t done it before, premier is for those who have done it and are in high school. “Then there is junior for those below high school.” Robocup Junior NZ aims to encourage school students to take an active interest in science, technology and the performing arts. It also aims to make students aware of potential employment opportunities in high-tech industries which are crucial to the ongoing development of the New Zealand economy. Mrs Dunn said that if their teams do well in the New Zealand nationals they will consider entering in the Australian national competition. “New Zealand has never competed in the international one, but thinking we should send them over to Australia to compete in their national competition. “Their nationals are much bigger than ours and would be a good test for us,” she said.

▌READER’S ▌ LETTER I am writing in response to the article on the front page of the August 3 Nor’West News. The article states SARA didn’t want the city council funding to rebuild a new community centre. This is incorrect. We are excited to see the money

allocated in the city council budget for a new centre and are already engaged with the community board and other local groups in discussions on what the centre should be. We suggested the timing of the projects with funding allocated could change so

things that are completely broken can get prioritised over the centre as the transitional building kindly supplied by Lions can suffice for a while longer. – Emma Twaddell, St Albans Residents Association, cochairwoman

ave you ever known a girl who wanted something so badly that she tried too hard to get it? Meet Charity Valentine, the girl who wants to be loved so much that she has lost sight of who she is. Charity is the lead character in CPIT’s National Academy of Singing and Dramatic Arts (NASDA) new musical, Sweet Charity, which they will be performing during September. The musical is presented by NASDA’s third year class and directed by renowned performer and Court Theatre Associate Yvonne Martin. NASDA’s Angela Johnson says the show follows Charity, a taxi driver for a New York City dance hall, through the ups and downs as she struggles to find love. While working at the seedy Fan-Dango Ballroom, she is often exploited by men, and has been strung along in a series of bad relationships. Finally, she seems to have met a decent fellow in shy tax accountant, Oscar. “It’s the story of someone who wants to be loved so badly. She really wants it too badly, but there is a lot of optimism in her character and she doesn’t give up hope,” Johnson says. “It’s a very relatable story.” Based on Federico Fellini’s screenplay for Nights of Cabiria, Johnson says Sweet Charity is a sophisticated comedy with some big musical numbers, including the hit Big Spender.

Brylee Lockhart plays Charity Valentine in naSda’s third year production of Sweet Charity.

“It’s got great music, great dancing and great atmosphere. We have a really strong cast who have been working hard to bring this together and they’re going to deliver a dynamic show which will have audiences leaving with an excellent theatre experience.” Sweet Charity will be performed September 10 to 13 at Rangiora Town Hall. Tickets are on sale now from townhallcinemas.co.nz or by calling 03 310 7240.

Delightful, clean lines from JNBY

T

JNBY’s stunning Spring/Summer 2015-16 collection is inspired, appropriately enough, by construction.

here is an inherent minimalism with strong structured outlines, softened with rich shades and multi layering. The collection presents an elegant interpretation of construction by redesigning dimensions and playing with volume and proportions, exaggerating the shapes of garments in H shapes, A shapes and egg shapes. As always with their garments, the delight is in the details, from where they place their creases to the subtle flow of dye along a streak line. Their clean and simple silhouettes are still highly feminine, using delicate fabrics and faultless, flattering cuts, and their pieces are designed to combine perfectly to form a capsule wardrobe that goes from work to play and from day to night. One of their key pieces is a stunning, draped dress with deliberately-frayed cap sleeves. Designed to suit all ages and shapes, it is in chiffon of the palest of greens and features the geometric shapes that tie the garment to the architectural theme of the collection. Perfect with flats for shopping or heels for dinner, or give it an edge worn over JNBY’s mesh leggings. Another key garment is a crisp, white tunic which falls straight from the shoulders but because it’s constructed from the lightest fabric, it skims the body. Pair it with their crop

pants in your choice of vivacious colour. The sheer mesh look that has been a feature of so many catwalks is made classy and given an edgy feel in the hands of JNBY’s designers. Pockets and seams become architectural features of garments that are designed to be layered over any outfit, adding drama, colour and texture. Subtle greys and neutrals, stark whites and soft blues are key colours running

Learning opportunities at Pre-health education at CPIT CPIT’s CAmPus ConneCT Love health and exercise science? If you don’t think

C

PIT’s Campus Connect branches are opening their doors so people have the opportunity to come and talk to the staff about what they can learn in their neighbourhoods. From 9am to 12pm on Tuesday, September 15, all of the Campus Connect sites, including Madras Street, Bishopdale, Hornby, New Brighton and Rangiora, will simultaneously host an open day so people can have a coffee and a biscuit, and discuss their study options in a relaxed setting. “We want to invite people to a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere where they can learn about Campus Connect and how they can benefit from it. Once they’re inside, they can have a casual chat about what learning options might help them get new skills,” manager of Campus Connect Peter Nock says. Campus Connect offers free computing programmes for those who want to learn at their own pace as well as courses in job hunting and business. The courses provide self-paced, flexible learning for anyone who wants to gain a formal qualification for employment, learn the fundamentals of computing or enhance existing skills. Campus Connect offers around 22 different courses so there is something to suit most people. Nock says the courses are flexible to meet people’s learning needs and what they want to achieve. “It can be intimidating for people to come in and try something new, especially if they haven’t enjoyed their previous

experiences with school or computers. But we offer a completely different way of studying at Campus Connect.” “Within our National Certificate, students have the option of selecting courses. Of these, the most popular courses would involve learning about Microsoft Word, Excel and MYOB,” Nock says. Campus Connect have had over 2500 students studying with them each year, with many of them enhancing their computing skills. To learn more about the Campus Connect Open Days, visit www.cpit.ac.nz, drop into a Campus Connect site to enrol in your first class, or phone 0800 242 476 for more information.

tudying a degree programme in health is more accessible than you might imagine. Enrol in a foundation pre-health programme and you could be studying nursing, sports science, human nutrition or physical activity and health promotion in February 2016. The condensed Certificate in Pre-Health and Science will have you ready to start a health degree in three months instead of six. You’ll be getting started in an industry that is crying out for well-trained people as our population ages and interest in health grows. Nursing is as dependable a profession as it has ever been, but modern nurses have much more opportunity for specialisation and for ongoing training. You can change specialisations and find the conditions that suit you – whether that is mental health, emergency, community nursing or hospital ward. CPIT is known nationally for its nursing programme, but the institute also offers a range of sports exercise and wellness degrees that are ideal for those who love sport, exercise, nutrition and wellness education. These are rapidly expanding areas as interest across health increases. The specialisations of the Bachelor of Applied Science are sports and exercise science, physical activity and health promotion and human nutrition. They lead to jobs such as

personal trainer or group exercise instructor and more advanced roles such as working with elite athletes, or as a sports scientist, community health promoter or private health consultant. The scope for employment is huge. Certificate in Pre-Health and Science students study core subjects, including human biology, cell and microbial biology, maths and academic literacy skills; however, you will also have the opportunity to select specialist subjects including chemistry, introduction to health and social services, interpersonal communication, algebra or statistics, dependant on which pre-health pathway you select. The Certificate in Pre-Health starts on September 21. Find out more at www.cpit.ac.nz or phone 0800 242 476.

spire Canterbury is a not-forprofit, community-focused organisation committed to meeting the needs of older persons with mobility issues and disabled persons. Aspire Mobile is a response to the need to reconnect, giving disabled people easier

access to services and introducing them to new products which can make their lives more enjoyable and provide them with a sense of inclusion in the wider community. They will show you how to choose a walker or walking stick that is the correct height, provide information about both their services and other resources available for community, disability and health organisations. Incontinence - a problem we must face

I

ncontinence is a problem for 1.1 million New Zealanders. Even though these numbers are huge with one in three New Zealanders affected, it is not commonly talked about in a social setting. For some people, it is a bladder problem but for others it can be bowel or a combination of both. Statistics show us that only one in three people with a problem seek help, many believing it is a consequence of ageing or childbirth and

for others, that nothing can be done. This is not the case as problems can be solved in the majority of cases. If you or a family member has a continence problem, don’t let fear or embarrassment stop you from asking for help and information. You can phone Continence NZ for advice or go to www. continence.org.nz. Nationwide continence services are listed on the website. These services are mostly free.

Don’t let the pain of arthritis slow you down

Help yourself Time-honoured remedy and Arthritis New Zealand too

A

Arthritis New Zealand’s annual appeal is from September 22 to 28

O I

f you have arthritis, you’re not alone. There are more than 578,000 people in New Zealand living with arthritis. This equates to 16 per cent of the population including 1000 children. Arthritis is one of the leading causes of disability and can occur to anyone at any age. Arthritis is not just a condition of the elderly. More than 50 per cent of those with a diagnosis are aged 15 to 64. The good news is that you can still lead an active and positive life with the right treatment and support. You don’t have to let arthritis’ pain slow you down. Exercise has proven benefits in terms of reduced stiffness, improved mobility and reduced pain. Comments from participants in Arthritis New Zealand’s exercise programmes include: “I have felt fitter and have more energy.” “Feeling better in myself.” “More movement in joints and less pain.” “Less drugs (pain killers).” Arthritis New Zealand is the national organisation focused on raising awareness, advocating for those with the condition and providing advice and support. For information on land-based, waterbased and stationary bike-based exercise programmes in Christchurch and the many other services we offer, please phone Arthritis New Zealand on 0800 663 463 or go to our website www.arthritis.org.nz.

ver half a million New Zealanders live with arthritis. It can cause much pain and is one of the leading causes of disability. Although there is no cure for arthritis, there are many ways you can manage and relieve your symptoms. Physical activity is essential to help relieve pain and stiffness and keep muscles strong. Move, move, move! One easy way to keep joints moving and manage pain and stiffness was discovered by an Otaki woman when searching for a way to help her severely affected husband. She made an aircycle exerciser. These exercises also help strengthen leg muscles to support knees and hips, and improve balance and mobility. Aircycle is donating $5 to Arthritis New Zealand from each direct order received this month. Visit www.aircycle.co.nz to order an Aircycle, or phone 04 569 5013 for credit card orders. If paying online or by cheque, mark your order “Arthritis.” You can call Arthritis New Zealand on 0800 663 463.

ccording to a country doctor DC Jarvis from Vermont in the USA, cider vinegar and honey (CV & H) can be an important part of a long healthy life. Dr Jarvis noted Vermonters, who regularly consumed cider vinegar and honey, had excellent health with many putting in a vigorous day’s work on the farm even when well into their 80s. Dr Jarvis found the effects of cider vinegar and honey on arthritis can be remarkable, with many patients reporting almost total relief after taking a course of the cider vinegar and honey. Dr Jarvis surmised that the acid and potassium in cider vinegar counteracted calcium deposits and helped the body control calcium use. As well as a general tonic, Dr Jarvis found regular administration of cider vinegar and honey at the onset of complaints such as the common cold, sinusitis, asthmatic attacks, hay fever and childhood diseases, such as chicken pox and measles, was accompanied by an improvement in the condition with symptoms either disappearing, or the conditions were extremely mild and soon over. Apple cider vinegar contains all the goodness of the apple in a form that is readily accepted by the body. Scientists have found over 90 different substances in ACV, among them 20 important trace elements, minerals, essential enzymes, a number of different acids, including malic acid, amino acids and roughage in the form of potash and pectin. A scientific study at the Shizuka University

in Japan has proven ACV to have potent antioxidant benefits – it can destroy free radicals, which are a major factor in ageing. Also, the ACV can break down cholesterol formations in the blood vessels. ACV and H is a powerful tonic that also promotes digestion, assimilation of nutrients and elimination of waste, and helps neutralise any toxic substances that enter the body. It is important to note not all cider vinegar is made in the traditional way and results are likely to prove disappointing with these other vinegars.

For those that haven't delighted in the Lindon Puffin experience... he plays a mean harmonica, spins hilarious yarns and fronts the occasional tv show but prefers to describe himself as a fisherman trapped in a musicians body. Lindon Puffin has released several albums, toured NZ relentlessly, and played across Australia, Europe and the States. He has supported some famous dudes like Billy Bragg, Jack Black & Chris Knox. Been short listed for a Silver Scroll, had an album in the top 10 and twice been adjudged live performer of the year. Lindon Puffin at Gustav's (free) | 9pm Saturday 26th September.
